Every summer it’s the same. There are tons of darling fashions out there, but it’s too damn hot to wear anything heavier than a Band-Aid on your bod. What’s a gal (or goofy guy) to do when faced with an evening out on the smokin’ asphalt jungle of Uptown CLT? Accessories, honey. Short on time, money or know-how? Enter BeadLush, the quaint little store on the Plaza. Now you’re only short on excuses to look fan-friggin’-tastic.
Lydia Stern, owner, and Vanessa Ross, bead artisan, give us the scoop.

Every spring and fall we go to Dan at Step on East Boulevard to talk about what’s rocking his world. SJ: Blondie again. DM: Yes, Blondie?
SJ: Spring has sprung. What should I be wearing on my hot, sweaty feet this summer? Flip-flops (hopefully)? DM: Umm, no. You would look fabulous in the Cordani shoes we’ve been carrying. They’re comfortable, stylish and have a substantial heel, so you won’t be aerating the soccer field.

“Good morning,” our instructor sings out. “Mary-Joe-Ellen Brown. That’s my name. And yes, that’s three first names,” she says holding up as many fingers. “I come from a long line of them.” She moves a few oversized donut- shaped cushions around at the front of the room, and arranges what appear to be breast milk receptacles on a large table. “There’s Sarah-Sue-Beth, Kelly-Jane-Emma, and even a Billy-Joe-Bob. You don’t have to see my birth certificate to know I’m from West Virginia,” she laughs. “And you,” she coos out over the course of a full breath, “are in breastfeeding class.” |

Gorgeous blond hair, pretty light spring dresses in the city and a bikini on the beach at Pawley’s Island. Walking hand in hand at Art and Soul of South End, watching the Olympic kayakers take on the competition channel at the Whitewater Center and taking her out on the boat on Lake Norman. Going to the swim club that’s not too far from our new old house and doing flips with her off the diving board (when Mom’s not watching).

Neighborhoods - One Year Later in Uptown |

It’s been a year since we made our move to Uptown Charlotte. You wouldn’t think in such a short span that much would be different from the time I first wrote about our move until now. This is Charlotte, though, so that statement doesn’t really apply. If the changes hadn’t been so gradual, Uptown would certainly seem drastically different to me. It definitely does to friends and family who visit us just once or twice a year. We have to spend the first day or two just touring and talking about what is new, what’s been started, and what is on the way. |

Washington is a foodie town, and high-end food and fine wine go together like politics and conversation. We begin with Oya, and after eating there it’s no wonder the place was packed at 10:45 p.m., with tables still pouring in. Chef Chris Hylton marries Asian ingredients with French techniques, which results in an explosion of flavors in a fiery, contemporary setting. Hylton is a grand master of French Asian fusion cuisine, and his creations are paired with a unique wine list hand-selected by Washington’s pied piper of wines, sommelier Andrew Stover, CSW. Stover is the director of wine marketing at Oya, and his pairings tempt the palate to the point that you want one of everything. And while many fine restaurants offer a laundry list of wines as a testament to how many they serve, Oya has no such Napoleon complex. They have a vast selection perfectly paired by cuisine, leading the way to gastronomic bliss. Oya is a Wine and Beverage Program of the year nominee of the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington. http://www.oyadc.com/ |
