Touch Me

My friend Staci LeFleur sees me at school. We talk about the 40 Days of Yoga and compare notes a lot. She comes up to me all excited. “I think I’ve got an experience you could put in your blog!” She tells me about a yoga class she went to that was totally packed, mat to mat. Staci is a “three feet” (of personal space) type girl and that takes some getting used to. At the end of class, the instructor asks everyone to get into a sort of supine twist, which means your arms are outstretched at your sides and your knees are to the opposite side. It was awkward because she has long arms and if she stretched her arms out the proper way, she would be touching the guy next to her. As if the guy next to her sensed her frustration, he took her hand and placed it on his bare, sweaty chest. Staci went with it and relaxed. Normally, she would’ve been grossed out, but yoga seems to be this alternate universe where it’s okay to touch strangers and be in close proximity. She said that it was the most intimate experience with a stranger she’s ever had (she’s never wrestled in KY Jelly at a college bar, apparently). Anyway, after the class, the guy gets up and leaves like it was no big deal. We talk about how this ‘40 Days of Rejuvenation’ thing is forcing us to get out of our comfort zones (that’s what it’s supposed to do, of course).

Damn, I’m hot!

So we’re supposed to be reading the Baron Baptiste book, and this week Baptiste tells us to identify ourselves as either “hot” or “cold.” Here’s the general breakdown, according to me. (If you want the real deal, buy your own damn book.)

Today I was at school and saw Staci LeFleur* and she’s totally into the 40 Days. She’s been to class several times and even bought one of the $50 super-absorbent sticky mats they sell at YogaOne. She’s doing great, reading the book and meeting new friends and I’m happy for her. Well sort of, in a jealous happy-for-you sort of way. I mean, I want her to have a positive experience and she seems like she is, but I keep stumbling with my crappy schedule and all my “busy-ness” and nobody in the classes seems to want to hang with me…ick. Whiner. God, I annoy myself sometimes.

The Busy Game

So here’s the deal. I don’t know how I’m going to get it together every day to get the studio practices, home practices and meditation all in. Panic sets in and I try to remember to breathe. I’m just trying to keep it together right now. I start questioning whether I’m just too busy to be a part of this and then I realize I’m playing the “Busy Game.” A lot of people play it. It’s as though our culture doesn’t value you unless you appear to be very, very busy, so we make a big drama about how busy our lives are and we can’t fit one more thing in them.

What was I thinking??

As we were leaving the meeting last night, Matt (from Uptown) stops me and says,” So what class will you be going to, Sheri? I’m thinking the 6 a.m. class sounds pretty good and then I can go straight from here upstairs to work. We could meet up and be ‘Team Uptown Magazine!’” He says it so hopefully and positively that I feel bad shutting him down. “Yeah, that sounds super great, but I have two children at home, one that needs to catch the bus at 6:30-6:45 a.m. and a toddler sleeping and my husband goes straight into work from there, so I don’t think the 6 a.m. class is gonna work for me.” As soon as I start talking about my kids and their skeds, Matt’s eyes glaze over the way most people’s do when they do not have or are not ready for children. I get it. Showing up (on time) for yoga 5 times a week is going to be the most difficult part of the 40 days
